Two Oceans: new record for entries

2013-01-16 00:00

THE 2013 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon events have set new records for speed and number of entries. In November, the first 10 000 entries for the half- marathon were snapped up in four days, and the 6 000 released at 10 am yesterday were sold out in three hours, making this the biggest half-marathon in SA.

When the first 50% of the available places were snapped up in one-and-a-half hours yesterday morning, it was expected that things would ease off, but the pressure on the website continued with the last remaining spot finished by 1 pm.

“We are blown away. We had initially expected it to take about six hours as we predicted processing 1 200 entries an hour, but this was phenomenal …” said race director Rowyn James.

Over 6 000 of the 11 000 Two Oceans 56 km ultra-marathon places have also been taken, while the 800 places in the 10 km and 22 km trial runs took only 24 hours to sell out. Around 2 000 international runners are expected to come to SA for the various events. The event is held over the Easter weekend.
