Two alleged robbers shot by police in Glenwood

2014-03-06 00:00

TWO alleged robbers were shot following a robbery at Badgers Restaurant in Helen Joseph (Davenport) Road in Glenwood early yesterday morning.

According to Badgers’ manager Tracy Robinson, the robbers broke the front doors just before 6 am and then stole a television, computers and some stock.

Security in the area was recently increased following a spate of robberies over the last few months and a JBC Security guard now patrols the area.

“The JBC guard called in the information on the vehicles, their registration numbers and their colour,” said Gary Clayton, who owns Keys on Davenport. “There were seven armed men in three vehicles.”

The JBC Security call centre then alerted the Durban Metro Police. “They [police] were there 30 seconds later,” said JBC Security CEO Cassim Malani.

Two of the suspects were shot by police and it is understood they were then taken under guard by ambulance to hospital. However, by the time of going to press, the Durban Metro Police had not responded to an inquiry on the matter.

Clayton, who is heading up a campaign to improve security in the area, said that at a meeting next week it is hoped local businesses will give the mandate for JBC Security to be present with armed response on a 24-hour basis and also provide a dedicated vehicle to patrol Helen Joseph Road.

Badgers closed for business yesterday, said Robinson, “but we made coffee for our regular customers who came by”.

“The community has been wonderful, there has been great support,” Robinson said. “We will pick up the pieces and keep going.”
