POLICE have warned motorists in Pietermaritzburg to be vigilant when buying fuel after two men were arrested for a robbery at a filling station in the city at the weekend.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said a car carrying four people stopped at the filling station on Saturday evening. The driver got out to pay the attendant.

Two men suddenly jumped into the vehicle and told the passengers that the driver would give them a lift.

“When the driver returned, one of the males produced a knife and instructed the driver to drive towards Copesville,” said Zwane.

On the way the men robbed the occupants of their cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash.

When they reached Copesville, the driver stopped the car and said there was a mechanical problem. When he opened the bonnet to inspect the engine, the men jumped out and fled towards Copesville.

“As soon as the suspects fled, the driver drove to the Mountain Rise police station to report the incident,” said Zwane.

After viewing CCTV footage from the service station, a police tracking team made a quick breakthrough and the suspects were arrested.

The stolen items were recovered.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni urged motorists to be vigilant at all times.
