Two cops shot in their vehicle

2011-04-29 00:00

AN off-duty female police constable and her South African Police Force employee lover were gunned down in an execution-style while seated in a vehicle in Durban on Wednesday evening.

This is the third female police officer who has been killed this month.

Police are still trying to piece together the reason behind the shooting and also hunt for the suspects.

Suspicions have emerged that their murder was planned since nothing was taken from them after the attack — and as a result the Organised Crime Unit has been assigned to the case.

The victims, Constable N. Zakwe (24) and Sibahle Blessing Buthelezi (24), were shot while in an Opel Corsa parked in front of Buthelezi’s house in Avocado Grove Road in the Avoca Hill suburb at about 7.30 pm.

Zakwe was working for the Durban Port Security Service, while Buthelezi was a data typist at Greenwood Park police station.

It is not clear how long they had been in a relationship and how many men opened fire, and fatally shot them on the head and chest. They died at the scene.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said police were still trying to establish how many bullets were fired.

“Both members were in a private vehicle and were off-duty. Nothing was taken from them. For now we don’t know how many times were they shot, the postmortem is going to determined that,” said Naicker.

The recent murder has increased the number of female police officers shot and killed in the last 10 days in South Africa, to three.

One of them was the victim of an attack while on duty.

The first attack on April 19 claimed the life of Constable Maviza Bengeza (25), who was shot at Zonkizizwe area of Ekurhuleni in Gauteng province.

She was killed during an ATM bombing when group of bombers also randomly opened fire using automatic machine guns. Her colleague — Constable Sihle Mbatha (27) — was shot in the leg.

Then five days later, a member of the police Dog Unit in Soweto, Sibongile Kgoale (37), was shot and killed by her husband with her service pistol.

The incident happened in the presence of the couple’s 15-year-old daughter at their Protea Glen home at about 6 am on April 25.

The child, who cannot be named — as she is a nimor — was asleep when she heard the commotion in the house. When she had woken up, she witnessed her father assaulting her mother, according to a relative.

Police spokeperson, Inspector Kay Makhubela said Kgoale was shot in the upper body.
