BULLETS tore through the air as police faced off with rifle-wielding robbers in a shoot-out that lasted almost 12 hours yesterday in Nkandla.

Gunshots began echoing through the streets of Nkandla from 2 am yesterday morning after three armed assailants attempted to rob a shop next to the taxi rank.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said when police arrived at the shop they found that the gang members were still inside the premises. SAPS officers had to call the Ulundi Tactical Response Team for backup before entering the building.

“When police tried to enter the premises the suspects opened fire on police, wounding two members,” Naicker said.

One police officer was shot in the hand and the other in the thigh. Sources, who could not be named, said that they were taken to the Empangeni Garden Clinic.

Police returned fire and two suspects were shot dead. According to Naicker, the third suspect managed to flee during the shoot-out.

It is further alleged that the suspects assaulted a security guard before breaking into the shop. The guard was taken to hospital for medical attention.

Naicker said one of the suspects was found in possession of an AK47 rifle.

Police have opened cases of burglary at a business premises, attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

KZN provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said: “Police will not hesitate to defend themselves against these dangerous suspects and we are not prepared to lose more members in the line of duty.”

The third suspect was still on the run late yesterday.
