Two-for-one rugby deal

2012-12-08 00:00

A NEW quadrangular Test rugby tournament will be introduced in South Africa next year and King’s Park will play host to an international double-header involving the Springboks, Scotland, Italy and Samoa.

The innovative new tournament will enable spectators to watch two Tests for the price of one.

The Boks will face Scotland in Durban on June 15, with Samoa and Italy facing off in the curtain-raiser.

The tournament opens in Nelspruit a week earlier, when the Springboks meet Italy in the second game, with Samoa and Scotland clashing in the tournament opener.

The event will be played on a log basis over two rounds, with the two top teams meeting in the final on June 22 in Pretoria.

Both Samoa and Scotland have been drawn alongside South Africa in Pool B at the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England.

It is as well that the King’s Park spectators will be treated to two Tests next June because they will have to wait another two years for their next international in 2015.

None of the plum fixtures in 2013 and 2014 — against New Zealand and Australia in the Rugby Championship — will be played in Durban. The first Rugby Championship Test to be played in Durban will be against Australia in 2015.

For the first time in Springbok history, Test matches will be solely hosted by the mother body.

However, Saru emphasised that all matches were subject to conclusion of commercial terms with planned hosting venues.
