Two held for warrant officer’s murder

TWO arrests have been made in connection with the murder of a police officer, Warrant Office Bheki Mntambo (55), who was found dead in Imbali on Friday.

This is considered a breakthrough for the police since they have established that one of the suspects is a member of a notorious theft syndicate operating within the greater Plessislaer area.

Speaking to The Witness yesterday, Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the first arrest was made at about 6 pm in KwaPata on Saturday. Jeevan said Plessislaer detectives arrested an 18-year-old male suspect.

Two firearms were recovered at his home. One of the firearms is allegedly the service pistol belonging to Mntambo.

“Investigations later led police to the Willowfountain area in the early hours of [yesterday] morning, where another arrest was made by members of the Plessislaer Crime Intelligence,” said Jeevan.

She said a 22-year-old male suspect was found in possession of two cell-phones. Police are still trying to establish whether one belonged to the murdered officer.

“At this stage, police have established that the 22-year-old suspect belonged to a syndicate gang responsible for robberies within the greater Plessislaer area. So it is a big breakthrough.”

She said the gang is known to pounce on unsuspecting victims and rob them of cellphones and handbags.

“Management of the South African Police Force commends the members for their hard work,” Jeevan added.

Jeevan said further arrests are expected.

The motive for Mntambo’s murder is believed to have been robbery, she added.
