Two hospitals, one budget?

2010-10-08 00:00

THE sharing of one name by two hospitals — one in Matatiele and the other in Mount Fletcher — is reportedly the reason that Matatiele’s Taylor Bequest Hospital is in such dire straits.

This follows reports that the Matatiele hospital is cash-strapped and on the verge of closing its doors because of a lack of medication, bandages, oxygen and other facilities.

The Eastern Cape Health MEC, Phumulo Masualle, visited the hospital and tasked management to make sure that all the problems are resolved.

The hospital’s budget for goods and services was reportedly cut from R15 million to R6 million this year.

Health spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo explained: “You find that Mount Fletcher Taylor Bequest would consume a budget that is meant for Matatiele Taylor Bequest Hospital and the result is that one of them had to suffer,” said Kupelo.

But he emphasised that Matatiele hospital will not be closed.

The Witness can reveal that the current budget cannot even cover water and electricity bills amounting to R3 million in the next three months.

Kupelo admitted that the current budget is already exhausted, but said the department is making sure the problem is resolved.

He said it has also asked the Matatiele municipal manager to reconcile its accounts as water and electricity bills are believed to have been grossly exaggerated. He noted that the local municipality had failed to bill the department regularly, and had then presented an inflated bill.
