Two in court over murder of ex-MP

2012-06-15 00:00

TWO men have been arrested in connection with the murder of former ANC MP David Dlali.

Police detectives arrested 22-year-old Simthembile Jakalase, a farm manager, and 20-year-old Matselandile Mehlomakhulu, a shepherd, in Matatiele on Tuesday . Both the suspects were employed by Dlali.

“There are some people who claim the first suspect [Jakalase] was closely related to the deceased,” claimed a source connected to the case.

Dlali (51) was found dead in the back of his bakkie near his Strydburg farm, Cedarville, by neighbours who were alerted to his disappearance by his employees on Monday morning.

He had been shot. Community members believed he was killed on Sunday evening.

Brigadier Miranda Mills, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape SA Police Service, told The Witness yesterday that good detective work had led to the arrest of the suspects. She said the suspects had appeared in court yesterday and were expected to appear again today.

She declined to elaborate on the arrests. “There is no such thing as a perfect crime. It might take a long time but there is always someone who saw something or who heard something and there is always evidence, which, combined with good detective work, leads to a quick arrest.”

She said the police recovered an AK47 automatic rifle, two magazines and 11 rounds of ammunition as well as R5 000 cash. The AK47 allegedly belonged to Dlali, a former member of the ANC military wing.

Sources within the police said the suspects confessed to the crime and showed them where the murder was allegedly committed.

Moloto Mothapo, the ANC spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, said the party welcomed the arrest and commended the police on their swift work.
