Two killed, 11 injured in KZN accidents

TWO people were killed and 11 injured, including 10 pedestrians, in four accidents in the province yesterday.

On the N3 northbound carriageway — in the vicinity of Key Ridge — a truck driver was killed when he was thrown from his out-of-control articulated vehicle.

The cause of the accident and details of events leading up the smash remain unclear.

Netcare 911 paramedics said they found the truck’s trailer and cargo in the northbound carriageway, while the cab had come to rest on the extreme right hand side of the southbound lanes. The driver’s body was lying in the median.

Jeff Wicks of Netcare 911 said the driver was declared dead at the scene.

Zinhle Mngomezulu of the Road Traffic Inspectorate said the accident obstructed traffic on both sides of the N3.

On the R103 near Chiveley in the Estcourt area, a driver was killed when he lost control of his car and overturned.

On the R603 Umbumbulu road near Illovo, 11 people, including nine pedestrians, were seriously injured when two bakkies collided and one ploughed into people at the roadside.

The two bakkies collided when one turned across the path of the other. “Of the 11 injured, six had serious injuries including severe head and spinal trauma,” said Wicks.

In Pietermaritzburg’s Chief Albert Luthuli Street, a pedestrian was knocked down and injured.
