Two killed as gang raids shop

2009-07-16 00:00

A WARTBURG shop owner was killed after being shot repeatedly in what appears to have been a planned attack by a gang of four men.

Before he died on the threshold of his shop, Phumlani Gwala managed to kill one of his attackers, who had apparently fired the first shot.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the incident happened at about 6 pm on Tuesday. He said Gwala had two gunshot wounds in the chest and one in the stomach. The other man was shot twice in the chest and stomach.

The motive for the shooting is unknown, but Budhram said four men arrived at Gwala’s shop in the Oqaqeni area outside Wartburg and one of them went inside the shop and fired shots at Gwala.

“He was at his shop, playing pool with three other people, when a white Nissan 1400 bakkie stopped outside the shop. Four men allegedly climbed out the vehicle and one of them approached the people inside the shop, while the other three remained outside.

“The man who entered the shop with the pretence of joining in a game of pool produced a handgun and fired in the direction of Gwala. Gwala drew his gun and returned fire, fatally wounding the unidentified man. Gwala ran out of his shop, but he was confronted by the three other suspects.

“One of the suspects then fired three shots at Gwala and killed him.”

The suspects jumped into the vehicle and sped away from the scene. The police are investigating. No arrests have been made.

The police appeal to anyone with information about the incident or the suspects to contact the investigating officer, Detective Inspector Nicholas Ndlela, at 033 503 1369 or 082 459 7352. Anonymous callers can phone Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
