Two match ban, fine for Goldstone

2008-09-18 00:00

MARITZBURG United defender Gary Goldstone was last night handed a two-match ban and R50 000 fine, with R40 000 suspended, by the Premier Soccer League for an elbowing incident in United’s match against Kaizer Chiefs in Chatsworth on Sunday.

Goldstone last night came before the PSL’s disciplinary committee for elbowing Chiefs striker Tshepo Bulu in the face in United’s 3-2 victory.

The defender this week apologised to Bulu in the press and said he had only meant to body-check Bulu, but had accidentally connected the striker’s face with his arm. Bulu will be out injured for a month with a fractured nose.

Last night’s sentence by the PSL adds to a R30 000 fine, with R10 000 suspended, imposed by United in a club disciplinary hearing on Tuesday.

Goldstone, who was only yellow-carded for the offence by referee Abdul Ebrahim, will miss United’s away match against Bloemfontein Celtic on September 28 and home game at Woodburn Stadium against AmaZulu on October 4.

The R10 000 payable from last night’s fine is due within 60 days, while the R40 000 is suspended for 12 months. In addition Goldstone must make a public apology to the player and club in question and pay the costs of the DC sitting.

A charge of assault against the defender was dropped. United, as the second respondent, were cautioned and discharged.
