Two men killed in New Year stabbings

2011-01-04 00:00

THE New Year started on the wrong note for two families in Pietermaritzburg who were mourning the murders of their loved ones at the weekend.

Sibusiso Gwala (30) was murdered while walking in Esinkitheni near Mountain Rise.

Lucky Magumba (22) died after being stabbed in a tavern in Slangspruit.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said Gwala was walking on the road when three men confronted him late at night.

She said he managed to run away when they assaulted him, but they caught up with him and stabbed him.

“Gwala then got up and stumbled to a neighbouring house where he fell to the ground and died,” said Jeevan. She said Gwala’s attackers are still at large.

It is thought that Magumba was killed after an argument with a man who approached him at a tavern to question him about Magumba’s brother in the late morning. Jeevan said that during the altercation the man reportedly produced a screwdriver and stabbed the Magumba in the chest.

He died at Edendale Hospital.

“Later the same day, members of the Alexandra Road Detective Services, acting on information received, proceeded to a tavern, approximately 50 metres from where the incident occurred and arrested a 38-year-old male suspect in connection with the murder. The motive is unknown,” she said.

Anyone with information rabout Gwala is asked to call Constable Skhumbuzo Ngcobo of Mountain Rise police station at 033 387 9629 or 072 470 3938.

Anonymous callers should contact Crime Stop on the toll free number 08600 10111.
