Two midlands designers make it to fashion finals

2011-04-23 00:00

TWO young designers from the midlands have been selected as finalists in the Mr Price New Designer competition of the 031 Collection. Claire Mackenzie, of Pietermaritzburg, and Cindy Leigh Armstrong, of Howick, will display their collections on the 031 catwalk from May 19 to 21.

The Mr Price New Designer competition is open to design students in Durban, and selects eight finalists to showcase a collection of six outfits. “I’m very excited [to take part in the competition]. You get to show people what you’re about,” says Mackenzie.

Mackenzie will showcase designs inspired by the city of Durban, which she has recently moved to. She is inspired by the city, the harbour, and the sea and sky, and uses Art Deco architecture to inspire the shape, line and colours in her clothing. Her style has strong elements of a fifties’ housewife, but with a modern twist.

Armstrong has taken inspiration from the nomadic lifestyle. After considering all the challenges facing modern society, such as globalisation, climate change and natural disasters, she realised that “nomads can survive through the harshest of conditions”. She has incorporated aspects of clothing worn by nomadic tribes, with layering and natural materials featuring in her designs.

The competition winner will receive R20 000 and a two-week internship at the Mr Price head office, as well as the chance to design a range of clothing to be sold in some Mr Price stores.
