TWO more people have died from their burn injuries, bringing to five the death toll after a generator exploded at a tuckshop in the Umzimkulu area on Christmas Day,

Three people, including a 10-year-old boy, died at the weekend and eight others are fighting for their lives in hospital.

Edendale Hospital public relations officer Samke Mncube said two patients would be sent to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban.

A group of about 15 men were partying in a tuckshop on Sunday night when a candle ignited petrol being poured into the generator.

The tuckshop owner, Busisiwe Ncwane, said she was not planning to reopen the shop any time soon because she was concerned about the victims.

“We have visited the families to give support,” she said.

Ward 20 councillor Mzoxolo Msiya said: “This must be a warning to everyone … that we must be extra careful when petrol is around”.

Umzimkhulu Mayor Mphuthumi Mpobanga said the municipality would cover the cost of the funerals.
