Two new art exhibitions by Verster and Walsh

2008-04-01 00:00

TWO new exhibitions open at the KZNSA Gallery in Durban today at 6 pm: Skin Markings: Works on Waxed Tissue Paper by Andrew

Verster, and Prayers, Dreams and Memories: paintings in oil on canvas by Aidan Walsh. Neon Anthem

members Liam Magner and Jacobus van Heerden will introduce the

exhibitions which run until April 20.

Verster was one of five finalists in the Sasol Wax Art Award last year for which he created a monumental, suspended installation of panels of wax-impregnated tissue paper. Applied with a hot iron, the wax transforms the tissue paper into a translucent material. In effect, the hot wax is used to laminate layers of paper together into sheets that — when stained and marked with coffee, tea, tumeric and ink — adopt the look and feel of old parchment. The panels form a maze and visitors have to negotiate their way through, via a number of possible paths.

Walsh is one of Durban’s most established painters, known primarily for his seemingly desolate landscapes and outwardly empty buildings. This exhibition draws on visits to the Northern Cape. Also on view are his narrative portraits, where naked unadorned men make their way across the landscape.
