Two new characters at this year’s Fantasia

2009-12-10 00:00

REGULAR visitors to Fantasia in Alexandra Park will know that one of the main attractions for the children are the cartoon characters. This year there will be two new additions — Shrek and Princess Fiona — thanks to the efforts of Hilton artist Karin Davel.

The two figures were sculpted out of high-density polystyrene, a task that Davel started in October.

“I jumped at the opportunity to dust off some of my rusty skills and get started with the creation of Shrek and Fiona,” Davel, who is a part-time teacher at St Anne’s College, said. “At first I attacked the two-metre by 1,2 metre by 650 millimetre-sized block with brute force and a hacksaw, shedding a lot of perspiration and gaining a few painful blisters in the process. But, creating these two characters, giving them attitude and appeal, gave me immense pleasure and a sense of ‘I can’.”

The cartoon characters are just one of the many attractions at Fantasia, which runs from tomorrow until December 20. Parents can also use the event to indulge in a bit of last minute shopping, while their little ones enjoy various shows, a fun fair and quad bike rides.

There will be a concert from noon on December 16, which will feature artists Shana, Tear-Gas, Bizori, and many others. Entry is R10. There will also be a battle of the DJs from 6 pm on December 18 and 19 at the amphitheatre, during which 20 DJs will be competing for R5 000. Entry is R10. Tickets are available at the site.

Fantasia will be open weekdays from noon to 10 pm and on weekends from 3 pm to 10 pm. There is ample free parking in Alexandra Park.
