Two on trial for murder, robbery of three metered taxi drivers

2013-06-05 00:00

TWO men are standing trial in the high court in connection with the murders and robbery with aggravating circumstances of three metered taxi drivers in Pietermaritzburg in 2010.

The two accused, Samkelo Maphumulo (32) of Umbumbulu and Siyabonga Zimu (27) of Folweni, Durban, have pleaded not guilty before acting judge Thoba Poyo-Dlwati to the murder and robbery of Sphamandla Zondi on May 30, 2010; the murder and robbery of Zephrid Nxumalo on June 26, and the murder and robbery of Xolani Hlela on July 10, 2010.

The state alleges that the accused — who lived in Durban at the time — travelled to Pietermaritzburg on the various dates to carry out a prior plan to rob and kill taxi drivers.

According to the state’s indictment, the accused would obtain the driver’s cellphone number, and thereafter phone him and arrange to be picked up by the taxi.

On the way to their destination they would force the driver at gunpoint to drive to an isolated spot where they would shoot him and escape with the car and other goods.

The case is proceeding.
