Two paramedics, bakkie driver hurt in collision

2010-01-06 00:00

TWO paramedics and the driver of a bakkie were critically injured when their vehicles collided on Inanda Road near Hillcrest yesterday morning. Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said the ambulance was responding to a call-out in Hillcrest when it slammed head-on into the oncoming bakkie.

“It is believed that the driver of the ambulance lost control of the vehicle after failing to negotiate a bend. The ambulance then slid into oncoming traffic and ploughed into the bakkie,” Wicks said.

The bakkie came to rest against the roadside Armco barrier with the driver trapped in the twisted metal, while the emergency vehicle spun out of control, ejecting both the driver and passenger.

The drivers of the ambulance and of the van were airlifted by Netcare 3 and Red Cross Air Mercy Services helicopters to the Netcare St Augustine’s and another hospital, respectively. The other paramedic was taken by ambulance to St Augustine’s Hospital.
