Two road races this weekend

2010-05-07 00:00

THE weekend kicks off with the next edition of the KwaZulu-Natal Cross Country League tomorrow afternoon at the UKZN sports ground in Francois Road, Durban.

The early doubt over the holding of this event has been resolved and the programme will commence at noon with the U10 races and finish with the men’s 12 km race at 3.40 pm. Entries close for each event 30 minutes prior to race time.

The event uses a very popular, but tough route as it runs around the track, cricket oval and up into the bush before dropping down to the lower soccer pitches, which inevitably means a steep climb back to the track. Organiser Clyde Kinloch has more details at 082 572 3408.

KZN’s Simone Meyer has been selected for the South African youth team to compete in the Southern Region Youth, Track and Field Championships in Gaborone on May 15 to May 16. The discus thrower has been competing against seniors in the Yellow Pages series and has every chance of returning with a medal.

There are two road races this weekend, with Woodview Athletics hosts of the KZN 10 km Championships on Sunday from Mount Edgecombe Recreational Ground in Siphosethu Road at 6 am.

The course commences with an initial lap around the local industrial park before heading up to and through Mount Edgecombe Golf Estate, which means a predominately downhill second half and fast times.

The 21 km runners take in an additional out-and-back route towards Verulam before finishing back at the recreational ground.

Runners wishing to be considered for selection to the provincial team to the SA 10 km Championships currently scheduled for Stellenbosch in August must compete in the KZN 10 km Championships. More details on the selection criteria are available from the KZN Athletics office.

Runners are reminded to allow a few minutes extra in their travel to the start due to road works on the M41. Ritesh Ramraj has more details at 083 500 2265.

The Canon Richards Bay Club hosts the RBM 32 km and 10 km in Richards Bay on Sunday. The race commences from the Bay Hall clubhouse at 6 am and covers a relatively flat course capable of producing fairly fast times. Virna McMaster has more information at 082 447 3040.

The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation is again the primary sponsor of the National Youth Run, which is held the day before the Comrades Marathon. Although open to all ages, the event targets the youth with the first boy and girl to cross the finish line winning R1 000 each, with additional prizes for the top 10 youth runners.

All athletes under the age of 19 are encouraged to enter and a prize of R10 000 is offered to the school with the most number of finishers in both the 10 km and the five-kilometre event.

The KZN Athletics office (031 312 9374) can provide more information about registration. Entries will not be taken on race day, but will be available at both the KZN offices and the Comrades Expo on May 27 and May 28.
