Two royal weddings, one lifetime

FOR Diana Wadsworth of Umtentweni going to watch Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s wedding was extra special because 30 years ago she was at the wedding of Prince Charles to Diana.

“The other amazing coincidence is the when I was at the first Royal wedding my daughter Sarah was four-and-a-half and now my grandson Trent is exactly the same age,” Wadsworth said.

Both wedding experiences have been magical, says Wadsworth.

The first trip was fully sponsored — by winning a competition she entered in the Pretoria News.

“There were 35 entries, nine finalists and then there were finally two of us who had to guess the wingspan of a plane. I had no idea really, but my estimate was closer than the other contestant so I won,” she said.

“The flights were sponsored by British Airways as was a wonderful trip.”

This time round, Wadsworth’s son, who lives in London, said casually in January this year “Mom would you like to go to the wedding?” He paid for the whole South African family to go.

“It was every bit as special as the Princess Diana’s wedding. I think Catherine and William look very in love,” Wadsworth said, who was totally thrilled with the wedding.

The one big difference she noticed while walking the route the day before through Hyde Park, St James’ Park and around Buckingham Palace was the vast number of press.

“Thirty years ago there was nothing like the incredible number of camera-men and press gathering.”

“It was really evident how media communications has progressed.”

When asked about her feelings about the marriage, she said, “I think they are going to be very happy. She is not as shy as Princess Diana and you can see they adore each other.”
