Two storming Bok touchdowns make global try of the year shortlist

THE change of style that saw the Springboks score some sensational tries this year has not gone unnoticed by the International Rugby Board.

Two jaw-dropping tries scored by the Boks have been nominated for the International Rugby Players’ Association try of the year.

They were scored by scrumhalf Francois Hougaard and wing Cornal Hendricks.

Hendricks’s try came on his debut against Wales in the June internationals in Durban.

Attacking from deep inside their 22, the Bok backline ran the ball the length of the field, with Willie le Roux featuring twice before passing the ball on to Hendricks to cross the whitewash.

Hougaard’s try came in the Boks’ epic 27-25 win over the All Blacks in the final match of the Rugby Championship at Ellis Park in October.

Once again the Boks ambitiously ran the ball out of their 22 before Hougaard received the finishing pass from Jan Serfontein to round off a brilliant team try.

Springboks Bryan Habana and Jacques Fourie previously won the award in 2012 and 2009 respectively.

The other three tries considered for this year’s awards were scored by Welsh centre Jamie Roberts, IRB 2014 Women’s player of the year Magali Harvey and England winger Jonny May.

The tries were chosen by a panel including Samoa’s Seilala Mapusua, former All Black Jeff Wilson, Ireland’s Alan Quinlan and Scotland’s Dan Parks.
