Two suspected robbers hurt in shoot-out

A SHOOT-OUT between police suspected robbers resulted in two being arrested in Umhlanga yesterday.

The suspects were spotted driving a Hyundai i20 around the plush suburb, and were believed to be monitoring a Standard Bank building.

“Members of the Durban North police believed the three suspects to be spotters and were possibly going to rob the bank,” said police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane.

He added that after the suspects noticed the police, they sped off and police gave chase. “When they saw the police, they opened fire and members of the police returned fire, injuring one of the suspects,” said Zwane.

The suspects later crashed their vehicle at the corner of Armstrong Avenue and Umhlanga Rocks Drive.

One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound to the arm. He and another suspect were arrested.

Zwane said that the third suspect was still being sought after by police. The recovered vehicle was hijacked from Sydenham earlier this month.
