Two youths admit to school teacher’s murder

2009-05-21 00:00

TWO youths admitted, in the high court in Pietermaritzburg yesterday, that they stabbed a Hibberdene school teacher to death earlier this year because they were hired to do so by a jealous wife.

Nkokozo Mthembu (18) and his friend, Ntokozisi Bhengu (19), will be sentenced by Acting Judge Rose Mogwera after the court has had an opportunity to study a pre-sentencing report that will be prepared in the light of the youthfulness of the two accused.

Sentencing was accordingly postponed until June 29.

Mthembu and Bhengu said in statements handed to the court by their legal aid lawyer, Kelvin Singh, that they were offered a payment of R50 000 to kill Sibanini School teacher, Cynthia Nxele, by a woman who suspected Nxele of having an affair with her husband.

They arranged for Nxele to accompany them to an isolated forested area on the pretext that they were going to sell her cheap petrol.

After she had stopped her car, Mthembu suddenly produced a knife and stabbed her in the neck.

Bhengu, who had alighted, came to the driver’s window and stabbed her in the chest several times with a screwdriver until she appeared to be dead.

The youths said they had loaded the body of the dead woman into the boot.

They then drove off with her car, but a short distance away an anti-hijacking device was activated and the car stopped. When they could not restart it, they abandoned the car.

The murder was committed on February 25 this year.
