UAE: Karabus on passport quest

2013-05-02 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Professor Cyril Karabus will today try in person to get his passport from the prison in which he had been held in Abu Dhabi.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) gave Karabus permission to return to South Africa, but the prison’s administrative system has not yet returned his passport. Michael Bagraim, attorney for Karabus in Cape Town, yesterday said they had received no news about his client’s passport from the UAE court. This was why Karabus had to go to prison himself to search for his passport.

It is still uncertain as to whether the UAE would lodge a new appeal against the verdict which had found that Karabus was not guilty of manslaughter of a three-year-old girl, whom he had treated in 2002 when he temporarily worked in the Abu Dhabi hospital.
