‘UFO’ over PMB: Reader describes chilling sighting

2012-04-18 00:00

FOLLOWING yesterday’s story about a sighting of a strange object in the sky over Swartberg, a reader has described the chills she felt down her spine after witnessing what she thinks may have been a UFO over Pietermaritzburg.

Jane Derengi (36) contacted The Witness yesterday and said she was lying on her bed in the CBD at around 9.15 pm on Good Friday (April 6) when she saw a bright light in the sky that changed colours — flashing red, green and yellow.

She said it was two to four times bigger than the evening star, which she often looks at.

She described how, lying dead still, she watched it move between the burglar guards of her window, thinking she must be seeing things.

“It flashed the same way a diamond flashes in the sun. I posted my sighting on Facebook, but no one else reported having seen it,” she said.

“It was definitely not an aeroplane. I see those all the time coming from Oribi and Durban. It moved way too fast to be a star and way too slow to be an aeroplane. It was very high.”

A fascinated Derengi said she called her husband Edwin to see the object and looked at it through binoculars. After watching it for about 15 minutes, she said the object moved a bit faster and then disappeared.

“I’ve been thinking about it ever since. It was exciting. I always liked to believe in extra-terrestrial life, although it scares me.”

Recently other readers have called The Witness to report seeing a bright light in the sky, which upon investigation turned out to be the evening star, which is actually the planet Venus.
