UK: Working holiday visa out, points system in

2008-10-28 00:00

The UK government announced yesterday that the new points-based system for those seeking to work or study in the UK will come into effect on November 27.

Apsara McNaught, spokeswoman for the British High Commission in Pretoria, said this is part of the biggest shake-up to the UK immigration system for 45 years.

“It will reinforce the UK’s position as a destination of choice for foreign workers, while tightening control against those who seek to abuse the system. The changes will also end the Working Holidaymaker scheme, which allowed 17- to 30-year-old Commonwealth citizens [including South Africans] to live, work and holiday in the UK for a period of up to two years.”

McNaught said the scheme will formally close on November 27, with applications being accepted up to and including November 26.
