UK teacher saves pupils, then drowns

2008-07-28 00:00

Police divers and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) are still searching for the body of a British teacher who drowned while rescuing his pupils at a St Lucia beach at the weekend.

It is believed that Sean Michaels Foxcroft (24) was having lunch at the beach when he saw his pupils in distress. He immediately went to help, but after assisting the pupils was swept away by a strong current.

Foxcroft and his pupils were taking part in a World Challenge Expedition that has been travelling across north-eastern SA over the past three weeks.

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said extensive air, sea and land searches are being conducted.

He said Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers would continue patrolling overnight and the sea search will recommence today.

He said the NSRI are in constant contact with Foxcroft’s family in the UK, the expedition operations room, the Foreign Affairs Department and British authorities.
