UKZN Impi fresh, focused and fired up

THERE’S no hiding the determination in Shawn van Rensburg’s voice when he talks about the opening round of the KZN Premier Division club rugby competition this weekend.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi head coach told The Witness yesterday that the students would be going all-out for a full-house five log points against their arch-rivals, Pietermaritzburg Collegians, when the teams meet at 3.30 pm tomorrow on the Woodburn Stadium turf.

Five log points means a minimum four tries and Van Rensburg is satisfied his team have the goods to do just that.

“We had a few weeks off after the Varsity Shield, so the guys are fresh,” said the Impi coach.

“The boys are really fired up for this game. This week’s training focused on some very good rucking and defensive work, as well as concentrating on our attack, going over the set-pieces and putting the final touches to our tactical plan.”

Varsity have a healthy depth to their squad and will start as favourites. However, Van Rensburg is taking nothing for granted, saying that “we cannot afford to underperform; we need to turn up at Woodburn fully switched on and put in a proper performance to win this derby match and build up some momentum for the season”.

The KZN Premier Division kicks off at 4.50 pm today at King’s Park Stadium when Harlequins take on Varsity College in the curtain-raiser to the Sharks’ Super 15 match against the Canterbury Crusaders.

KZN champs College Rovers tackle Crusaders at 3.30 pm on Saturday and will no doubt still be feeling the effects of a busy Easter weekend in George, where they took part in the Community Cup and were edged 26-24 by Despatch of Eastern Province in a knife-edge final.

In tomorrow’s other game, Durban Collegians travel to Empangeni to face Zululand Rhinos. KZN First Division South action tomorrow sees Richards Bay welcome Amanzimtoti, while Jaguars are at home against Westville.

KZN U20A league action tomorrow sees Quins hosting Varsity College, Rovers at Crusaders and PMB Varsity hosting Durban Varsity at 3.30 pm.
