UKZN Impi slay Vikings in a pulsating Varsity Shield encounter

2013-02-01 00:00

A SUPERB second half saw the University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi overturn a seven-point deficit at half-time to win 34-31 in a pulsating Varsity Shield encounter against Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Vikings in Pretoria yesterday night.

The Impi trailed 23-16 at the changeover after the Vikings had scored tries through right wing Thabo Mangena and a brace by left winger Fanie Raseroka.

Impi right wing Jaco Potgieter dotted down in the first half, with the rest of the points being scored by the boot.

The Impi delivered a killer blow in the second half when replacement back Hendrik Groenewald went over twice as the match neared its end, with the Vikings scoring through centre Zandre de Bruin when the contest was all but over.

Potgieter’s five penalties and two conversions were crucial in this match of many uncertainties.

This win in Pretoria, following on the outstanding 19-7 victory over University of Fort Hare Blues in Pietermaritzburg just three days ago, means that the University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi will be looking to make it a hat-trick when they play Bloemfontein’s Central University of Technology (CUT) at 7 pm on Monday at the Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road in Scottsville.
