UKZN have a chance in Varsity Cup

2009-05-10 00:00

THE University Sport South Africa (USSA) Rugby Week was held at the University of Johannesburg last week and it brought good news to KZN club rugby, particularly in Pietermaritzburg.

At the culmination of the week last Friday, the combined University of KZN rugby side made history by finishing ninth and qualifying for the FNB Varsity Cup promotion/relegation fixture against Tshwane University of Technology (TUC).

The UKZN squad was made up of bona fide, full-time students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, irrespective of whether they play for the PMB or Durban university clubs or not.

In a tightly contested fixture in Johannesburg last Friday, UKZN overcame adversity to record a 23-20 victory over fellow FNB Varsity Cup contenders Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

With UKZN’s win, many issues are now extremely important. In order for UKZN to play in the Varsity Cup it has to ensure PMB Varsity remain in the KZN Premier Division. At present, another promotion/relegation game is certain. It also has to re-organise and consolidate its own team for the Varsity Cup promotion/relegation game against TUT of Pretoria.

Meanwhile, College Rovers went to the top of the log in the KZN Premier Division after beating Harlequins 40-13 on the Bluff last Friday.

Other UKZN matches:

Monday: UKZN 24 NMMU (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) 31;

Wednesday: UKZN 15 UWC (University of the Western Cape) 10.

Friday: UKZN 23 CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology) 20.
