UKZN ranks third best in SA and in the world’s top 500

2011-09-01 00:00

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal is the leading institution in the province and ranks third in South Africa.

The 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) results were released recently revealing that UKZN has maintained its ranking within the best 500 universities in the world. UKZN Vice Chancellor, Professor Malegapuru Makgoba, said this is the eighth consecutive year that UKZN has been ranked.

Only three South African universities are ranked in the top 500, the other two being the Universities of Cape Town and the Witwatersrand.

ARWU was first published in 2003 and uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of highly-cited researchers, the number of articles published in journals of nature and science, and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution. Every year ARWU ranks over 1 000 universities.
