UKZN’s mould-riddled music department could undergo inspection

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal’s mould-riddled music department could face inspection by the Department of Labour.

And according to experts, if the mould is found to pose a severe health risk and is backed up by medical records, the buildings could face closure.

In a confidential report compiled by lecturers and seen by The Witness this week , the music department staff based at the university’s Howard College campus complained about “allergies and respiratory disorders” due to mould in various music buildings. They claimed sick staff had been “medically diagnosed” as being ill due to mould exposure.

Labour spokesperson Nhlanhla Khumalo said if they received a formal complaint they would inspect the building.

“Employee safety is our key priority. If workers’ safety and health is being jeopardised we must investigate and seek remedial action,” said Khumalo.

The Labour Department recently closed three Social Development Department buildings that were unsafe.
