UNIZUL: Nursing science student's determination lands him on SABC3

2011-11-03 00:00

UNIVERSITY of Zululand fourth year Nursing Science student Zamani Dlamini’s dedication to his community will be shared with the country on SABC3’s television programme, Special Assignment, next month.

A documentary film crew spent two days shadowing Dlamini, who hails from Hlabisa. He is studying under the Mtombo Bursary provided by the Friends of Mosvold and volunteers at Hlabisa hospital.

“I grew up in a poverty stricken area and I saw how sickness affected the community and my grandmother, and I wanted to help. I finished in school in 2000, but I could not study further because of lack of funds.

“I tried to raise funds to study nursing by working in the mines and becoming a taxi driver, but seven years passed by and it was not coming together.

“In 2006 I got a bursary which required me to do volunteer work, which reinforced my love for nursing. I could have given up on my dream, but seeing people suffering and knowing I could help them kept me motivated,” explained Dlamini.

UniZul Nursing Science head Professor Thokozani Mhlongo said Dlamini’s approach reflects new efforts to transform the health department and introduce state-of-the-art courses and technologies so that future students will be able to undertake all their training on campus.
