UWCT final to be fun event

2012-08-14 00:00

HAVING replaced what used to be the Masters World Championships, the UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) final provides amateur road cyclists with the chance to compete with riders from around the world within their age categories for the coveted UCI World Champion rainbow jersey.

The event provides the South African cycling community with a golden opportunity to showcase South African road talent throughout the senior age groups.

It is yet another feather in the cap for Pietermaritzburg when it comes to hosting cycling events of the highest standard, and once again reaffirms its title as “Cycle City” of South Africa.

All the action gets under way with a time trial on Thursday, August 23, in and around Wartburg, followed by the 61 km and 96 km road races on Saturday, August 25, and the 112 km road race on the Sunday, starting and finishing at Alexandra Park.

There are two warm-up events before the official racing starts, with the 7,6 km 4Ever Cycles Hill Dash up Old Howick Road on Monday, August 20.

The next day features the 36 km, 48 km or 60 km Mt Verde Challenge, which takes riders on a 12 km lap through the Mt Verde Country Estate.

In the course of the UWCT final, riders will be able to mix and swop stories about their cycling careers and home countries at a variety of evening functions.

Tuesday, August 21, sees the hosting of a traditional South African braai, and pasta parties on the Friday and Saturday will help riders with their last-minute carbo-loading. The event will close with a traditional South African evening on Sunday, August 26.
