Ugandan fraudsters deported

2008-06-16 00:00

Two Ugandan citizens who pleaded guilty to traveller’s cheque fraud totalling more than R100 000 and admitted having illegally entered South Africa, were on Friday given suspended prison sentences in terms of a plea bargain agreement in Pietermaritzburg.

Immigration officials were at court and the two — Ivan Mawanda (26) and Tracy Nassuma (28) — were to be immediately deported, said prosecutor Sarel van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe said this was the reason why the accused were to be given suspended sentences.

Mawanda and Nassuma each received a five-year suspended sentence for fraud and three months’ imprisonment conditionally suspended for illegally entering the country.

Both of them made use of a temporary residence permit number issued in the name of James Austin Trump.

Mawanda admitted that during December 2006 and January 2007 he defrauded banks in Musgrave, Umhlali and Pietermaritzburg by cashing false American Express traveller’s cheques for R43 948,45.

Nassuma said she defrauded banks of R72 468,45 in Pinetown, kwaDukuza, Port Shepstone and Margate in January 2007. Nassuma said the cheques were from an “unknown Nigerian”, who was to pay her a commission. Mawanda said he got the cheques from Europe.
