Ukhozi to screen muthi ads

2012-06-14 00:00

HERBAL medicines advertisements broadcast on Ukhozi FM will now be screened to ensure the products they punt indeed have medicinal value.

The station has broadcast numerous advertisements for products, claiming that they treat various diseases. MEC for Health Sibongiseni Dhlomo said some of those adverts made serious medicinal claims and had the potential to mislead millions of desperate people. Ukhozi FM last month recorded 7,1 million listeners.

“When I was young and something had been said on the Ukhozi FM, it was taken as the gospel truth,” said the MEC.

Station manager Bonga Mpanza said Ukhozi FM was feeling uneasy about messages on the ads. “We took a decision to broadcast these after 9 pm and we have now taken a decision to move them to after 11 pm,” said Mpanza

“We are concerned about their claims,” said Mpanza. “We want the adverts that we are running to have credible information. Right now this information cannot be guaranteed.”
