2010-05-04 00:00

THE Umgungundlovu district team won the U19 section of the Provincial Girls’ Hockey Tournament in Pietermaritzburg last weekend, while Umlazi took the U16 title

The tournament saw 21 teams battle it out for KwaZulu-Natal district honours at the Maritzburg College, AB Jackson, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High and Epworth turfs.

The teams were ranked from last year’s tournament and placed into two sections with the top six teams in section A and the lower teams in section B.

“This created a strength-versus-strength scenario, which is good for hockey in KwaZulu-Natal,” said Charmaine Koekemoer, vice-chairperson of KZN Schools’ Hockey.

Bongani Zuma, manager of the Department of Education’s (DoE) co-curricular support services, confirmed the support of the DoE for the provincial teams that will be participating in the national U16 and U18 tournaments next month.

The U19 A section was won by the A team from the Umgungundlovu district (essentially the PMB schools plus Treverton, Howick and Wartburg), followed by Umlazi A, Umgungundlovu B, Pinetown A, Sisonke and Vryheid. The U19 B section went to Othukela district followed by Ugu, Empangeni, Umzin-yathi and Amajuba.

Umgungundlovu U19 A beat Pinetown 2-0 (Amy Greaves, Rachel Froneman), Sisonke 2-0 (Amoré de Wet 2), Umgungundlovu B 2-1 (Froneman, Vanda Papenfus), Umlazi 3-0 (Tamryn Strumpher, Papenfus, Tori Sylvester) and Vryheid 3-0 (De Wet, Sylvester, Papenfus). Umlazi A won the U16 A section with Pinetown A, Umgungundlovu A, Ugu, Umgungundlovu B and Empangeni following. The U19 B section went to Umlazi B followed by Amajuba, Umgungundlovu C, Vryheid, Pinetown B and Sisonke. Although Umgungundlovu U16 A were unbeaten in the tournament, it was primarily the draw against their B team that cost them the tournament. They beat Empangeni 4-0 (Melissa Glutz, Heather McEwan, Page Phillips, Katie Polkinghorne) and Ugu 1-0 (Polkinghorne) and drew with Umgungundlovu B 0-0, Umlazi 1-1 (Glutz) and Pinetown 1-1 (Justine Pearson).
