Umhlanga Rocks break-in foiled

2014-05-09 00:00

QUICK-THINKING security guards blocked four thieves from getting away after they had broken into a business in Umhlanga Rocks yesterday.

Enforce spokesperson Jason Keith said they were alerted to the break-in at about 5 am.

When security personnel got to the business, four suspects jumped into their getaway Hyundai Accent but the security guard driver intercepted the vehicle.

“The guards spotted a white Hyundai Accent with registration NJ 68874. It was a getaway car. Our driver drove in front of the car, and the vehicle crashed head-on,” said Keith.

He said the guards arrested two suspects while the other two escaped into the taxi rank area.

Two guards who were sitting in the back of the security van were injured during the crash. They suffered facial injuries and were taken to hospital by ambulance.

A flat-screen television, laptop, black bag, large cash drawer containing cash, one monitor and two dumbbells were recovered from the getaway car.

Keith said these were identified by the business owner as his belongings.

“Several house-breaking implements such as a four pound and small hammer, two large screwdrivers, a crowbar and balaclavas, were also found in the car,” he said.

When checks were done on the car’s registration plates it was discovered that they were fake.

The Durban North police arrested the two suspects and a business break-in case is being investigated. Police are also searching for the other two suspects who escaped.
