Umhlanga surfing festival will be sizzling with action

2013-11-08 00:00

UMHLANGA Rocks main beach hosts the annual Umhlanga Lizzard Nature Valley Summer Surf Festival on December 7 and December 8, the event part of the Umhlanga Summer Carnival.

This year’s contest looks set to be a grand affair with close on R50 000 offered in prizes and giveaways. If Durban delivers a dose of steamy summer weather over the two days, Umhlanga could be the place to be, with action sizzling on and off the water.

This is a fun, family event, with surfers of all ages invited to enter, from the seasoned masters to U12 hopefuls.

Lizzard team manager Gavin Roberts encouraged people to enter the event and spend holiday time on the beach.

“No doubt this is the fun surfing event on the annual surfing calendar. Surfers come from around the country to compete — not only for the prizes, but for the surf and amenities,” he said. “Umhlanga beach is recognised as one of the country’s prime venues and this event is a family affair, allowing youngsters to surf with their moms and dads.”

The event is sanctioned by the KZN Central Surfing Association. Entries are available at or e-mail at
