Umlazi: Taxis on hold after fee protest erupts

2008-07-21 00:00

Taxi operations have been suspended in Durban’s Umlazi area after violence broke out at a taxi rank yesterday morning.

It is believed that several taxi operators were conducting a demonstration to protest over route fees when shots were fired.

Terrified commuters fled in all directions.

According to a statement by the Transport Department, it is alleged that the source of conflict is around Megacity, which is run by five Umlazi associations.

Metro police spokesman Superintendent Thozamile Tyala confirmed that operations had been suspended.

“Fortunately, no one was injured in the scuffle. However, we have sent police members to monitor the area. We do not want more trouble,” he said.

Transport MEC Bheki Cele said that law enforcement in the area must be strengthened. He said there are better ways of resolving conflicts without inconveniencing commuters.

Chairman of the KZN Transport Alliance, Eugene Hadebe, said those members who do not belong in the Umlazi could not operate there. “There are police at the rank who impound their vehicles … These operators only want to cause problems,” he said.
