Umngeni fixing the problem

2010-12-23 00:00

WHILE it has been established that damage to the transformer at the Howick West Pump Station is the reason behind taps running dry in certain suburbs around Pietermaritzburg, the affected households should brace themselves for another day without water today until the problem can be solved — hopefully by this afternoon.

Shami Harichunder, the corporate stakeholder manager for Umngeni Water, said the water supply in Howick West, Merrivale, Mpophomeni, Hilton, Blackridge and Sweetwaters was interrupted from about 1am on Wednesday morning.

Eskom engineers, who were called in to investigate the cause of the problem, found that the transformer responsible for generating power to pump water was damaged beyond repair. This meant a new transformer had to be ordered from Pretoria since it cannot be sourced locally.

“We would like to apologise to the households in all of the affected areas. We appreciate their patience and assure them we are doing our best and are working around the clock to have the problem resolved.”

Speaking to The Witness yesterday afternoon, Harichunder said: “We are expecting the transformer to arrive overnight and it will be installed tomorrow [Thursday]. We expect water supply to be restored by tomorrow [Thursday] afternoon”.
