‘Unbearable’: Strike at dirty courts

2012-05-09 00:00

MAGISTRATE’S and regional court proceedings were delayed for about two hours yesterday when prosecutors, interpreters and clerks downed tools. They were protesting “unbearable” conditions at their offices due to the failure of the Public Works Department to renew cleaners’ contracts on time.

The protest was halted after two hours when the staff were told the issue had been resolved and they were given an assurance that the cleaners would be “back in full force” today.

National Education Health and Allied Workers’ Union chairperson Emmanuel Kleinbooi told The Witness earlier the offices had not been cleaned for a week-and-a-half. “The situation is chaotic. Bins have not been emptied, toilets and offices have not been cleaned. The conditions are unbearable and this is resulting in a health risk. Our offices are visited by the public daily.”
