Unbeaten United top of NFD log

2007-11-29 00:00

United have won four out of seven games and drawn three, are a point clear of second-placed Bay United and the only unbeaten side in both streams of the NFD. In the Inland Stream FC AK, on 16 points, are two points clear of Dynamos having won five, drawn one and lost one.

While all three of United’s draws have come in their last four games, they have also been in away matches and twice under adverse circumstances, with United having players sent off against Ikapa Sporting in Cape Town and Bay in Port Elizabeth, both games ending 1-1. United drew their last fixture 0-0 against Nathi Lions in Durban on Friday.

“Overall I am very pleased. It is a very tough league and we are well within all of the targets that we set ourselves at the beginning of the season,” Palmer said yesterday.

“Now it is the second round and we start from scratch with a new set of targets. The first thing is to reach the Christmas break unbeaten.”

Like the Premier Soccer League (PSL), the NFD will break for almost two months in late December over the period of the African Nations Cup in Ghana in January/February.

One slight area of concern for United has been goal-scoring, with the too many missed chances costing the team vital points. Palmer is hoping a new signing from Orlando Pirates’ youth programme, Tshepo Mokone, can help solve the problem.

United will play their fourth match out of five on the road this weekend against Western Province United in Cape Town on Saturday, and will hope to break back to winning ways. The Team of Choice beat WP 1-0 in their opening game of the season at home.
