Underberg: Security guards at Village Mall shot in armed robbery

2013-02-06 00:00

A SECURITY guard was shot three times in both legs after he and his colleague were robbed at the Village Mall in Underberg on Monday morning.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said the guard, identified only by his surname, Changwe, was robbed at gunpoint as he entered the mall with a money bag.

After the robbery, three other men shot Changwe and a colleague as they sat in their security vehicle outside the mall, and stole their 9 mm service pistols.

The robbers fled in a silver-grey BMW with ND registration plates, which was later traced to Bulwer.

One man, aged 34, has been arrested.

Mark Winterboer, operations director at Berg Protection Services, where the guards work, said the injured guard was in a stable condition at the Pietermaritzburg MediClinic.
