Undersea fun resort planned for Durbs

2012-07-14 00:00

DURBAN — Plans have been announced for an entertainment centre in Durban that will have a 17 000-seater amphitheatre and undersea restaurants.

Welcome Msomi, CEO of Msomi Puisano, told Weekend Witness his firm would be working with U.S. hospitality outfit The Toney Watkins Company and a construction company, Sea View Enterprises.

“We will also have submarines that will be taking people to explore the oceans for them to understand environmental issues,” he said.

Msomi, who has travelled extensively, said the centre would create jobs for young people in KwaZulu-Natal.

“My hometown is Durban. While working in South Africa and in other countries, I felt I needed to make a contribution to KZN. I felt I needed to create something that was amazing,” he said.

The centre will be built in phases, with the first — to be completed within a two-year timeframe — costing about R1,4 billion. Also participating in the project will be the Department of Economic Development, KZN Tourism and the South African Maritime Safety Authority.

“We have received a response in terms of funding. We will be working through Ex-Im bank in America,” said Msomi, adding that there would also be opportunity for South Africans to invest in the project.

He said they a site in Durban was being identified, after which work on the project would begin.
