Underwood woos fans in KwaMashu

2014-08-02 00:00

HOLLYWOOD actor Blair Underwood got a warm local welcome from elated fans when he visited KwaMashu yesterday.

Underwood was one of the many stars to add his hand print to the wall of commitment and hope on the soon-to-be Arts and Culture Centre adjacent to the Multi Arts Centre.

Just hours after Underwood arrived in the country, he addressed performing arts students at the centre.

“I can’t wait to see more of Durban, it’s my first time here,” he said.

Underwood is touring the province with the KZN Film Commission to find a location to shoot a film he is producing, based on the book My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due .

Carol Coetzee, from the KZN Film Commission, said they were delighted to host Underwood.

“We will be visiting the Bergville area in the Drakensberg on Saturday [today] to scout shooting locations,” she added.

Underwood is accompanied by his wife Desiree da Costa and their three children.

They also visited the township’s Yogi Centre at the Gandhi Settlement.

He admitted that he did not know much about the film industry in South Africa, but he hoped local actors would join his venture once production started.

“There is currently no time-frame as to when shooting will start.”

When quizzed about which African hero he would like to portray in a movie, Underwood said, “I would like to portray Desmond Tutu because of his child-like spirit and whenever he is seen, he always has a smile on his face.”
