Unhealthy: Doctor paid for years after quitting

2010-09-25 00:00

NELSPRUIT — A doctor who resigned from Mpumalanga’s Health Department in 2003 has received over R490 000 in extra salary payments, because the department apparently “forgot” to remove her from their database.

Despite the fact that the department has known about this loss for years, they have not done anything to get the money back.

Dr Pearl Maseko-Magongo is currently working as a neurosurgeon in the Arwyp medical centre in Kempton Park. She formerly worked as a doctor in the Tonga hospital near Komatipoort.

After resigning, she received her salary every month for two years and apparently never informed the department about the error. The department didn’t do anything about it, even though they have known about it for four years.

Maseko-Magongo admitted this week that she resigned in 2003.

“I don’t want to see my name in the newspaper! If you don’t tell me who your source is, I have nothing to say to you,” she said.
