Unilever clientele warned of scam

2013-08-21 00:00

HOME goods manufacturer Unilever has warned of scams, carried out in its name, which are fleecing its customers.

The company said many of its customers have been receiving SMSes claiming they have won a prize on one of their products. The sender asks the customers to provide banking details and pay a certain amount so they can receive their prize.

Unilever produces products like Sunlight, Skip, Omo, Knorr and Robertson spices and often runs competitions on these products.

Customers in places like Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg have been targeted in the scam.

“Unilever will never ask their customers to pay to claim prizes … the idea behind a competition is to reward customers for their brand loyalty and we will never ask them to pay,” said Shaadia Vawda from the company.

“We have recorded many complaints; at times we record about six complaints per day and some of the customers no longer report this, but it is important that they report [the scam to] the police as this is a criminal offence,” she said.

The scammers will usually ask for small amounts of money as many people are not willing to part with large amounts. But, in some cases, they are braver and ask for more.

“If, for instance, they say the winner will receive R250 000, that person might be willing to part with a few thousand rand,” said Vawda.

“Unilever brands run SMS competitions from time to time, but they are fully branded and recognisable as such.”
