Union: Sactwu office burned

2011-11-22 00:00

THE offices of the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (Sactwu) in Newcastle were gutted by fire last Monday. The union views this as an attempt to stop it taking clothing factories in the area to task when employee rights are abused.

Sactwu general secretary Andre Kriel said the destruction of the offices comes in the wake of moves by the union to highlight atrocious labour and human rights’ abuses in clothing factories in Newcastle.

“We have previously indicated our knowledge of threats against the safety of some of our officials in reprisal for raids conducted at some Newcastle clothing companies in late September 2011. We therefore urge the Newcastle authorities to investigate the possibility of arson,” Kriel said in a statement. — WR.
